January 22, 2010 - Annie went in for an ultrasound to check for blocked bile ducts or signs of injury. Still a mystery... no signs of anything wrong except extremely elevated liver enzyme and bilirubin numbers.

January 28, 2010 - Dr. Murray at Seattle Children's Hospital wanted to do a biopsy to try to get to the bottom of what was happening. It was scheduled right on Annie's 6th birthday. We had a little party for her the night before. Notice the yellow in her eyes!

08 - Annie's First Liver Biopsy

We were so anxious to find out the results since all the viruses and diseases tested for through blood labs and urine tests were negative.

February 3, 2010 - The biopsy gave us no new information (other than that the problem was not an autoimmune disease). Annie became very sore and VERY yellow over the next couple of days. She was admitted to ICU where it was determined she was in Acute Liver Failure and needed an immediate liver transplant. Here is our neighbor, Nadia, visiting and playing with Annie the day before the surgery.

We were informed that a matching deceased liver donation came through at the last minute (after testing Mom for a living donor surgery). The transplant was scheduled for the morning of February 4th.

Aunt Wendi from Vancouver, WA and Aunt Carhelia from St. George, UT came to take care of Megan and Chloe that night so Mom and Dad could stay with Annie as doctors and surgeons prepared for her life-saving surgery.

February 5, 2010 - Annie's liver transplant surgery lasted 11 hours and 59 minutes. It was performed by Dr. Healy and Dr. Dick at Seattle Children's Hospital. In addition to her transplant, they had to perform a procedure called a Roux en Y to take care of an extra bile duct on the donor liver.

February 6, 2010 - On this day, Grandma Chase came to visit Annie at the hospital. We decided to wash Annie's hair. We used a suction tube to suck up all the water and lots of pads under her head.

February 6, 2010 - It was not easy, but we got Annie out of her bed and into a rocking chair less than 48 hours after her transplant. Her nurses were so proud of her! Each day the "yellow" slowly but surely disappeared.

February 11, 2010 - Annie posing with the pharmacy specialist, Jennifer, who trained Mom and Dad on how and when to give Annie her medicines. We had to do it ourselves for a 24-hour period before Annie could be discharged.

10 - Stiches are Out

The doctor pulled out half of them while she screamed, and then he suggested she take the others out on her own. The scabs were holding some of them really tight, so she soaked in the tub for awhile and was able to get 11 more out. The next day she pulled out the last three.

It was determined that she did have some rejection and that she would have to stay for another 4 days to receive Prednisone treatments through an IV.

So she had to return to the hospital for another ultrasound and increase her anti-rejection medicine. Then her numbers came back down again. We were so glad to have Annie home!

March 24, 2010 - Back at Children's for yet another biopsy and ultrasound. Annie's enzyme numbers jumped up by almost 200 points. So the doctors wanted to check for rejection again.

Annie is getting used to the procedures, so she's content to kick back and keep herself busy while she's waiting. The hosptial was so full on this day that when she was finished, we had to wait over 6 hours to get her own hospital room.

When the results came back, there was no rejection! Her elevated numbers may have been from high drug levels, a cold, or the beginnings of a fatty liver condition (which may be caused by the steroids). They discharged us on the 25th of March in the late afternoon.
